My favorite outfits are the simple, unpretentious ones. I had a phase when I tried to slam together tops and bottoms and shoes that were going in opposite directions, stylistically speaking. You can find some visual evidence in earlier posts of my blog... Things work out so much better for me when I just go with the flow and not force any of my clothes to be something they're not. Take this outfit for example. All these pieces are basic shapes, unembellished. The boots are even scuffed and the jeans naturally faded from wear (which I really like, by the way. This is the first time I've had a pair of raw denim jeans that has aged so well). Taken alone or together they harmoniously say "casual, laid-back, earthy."

One more thing: Moss green and black make an amazing duo.

My beautiful sister Heather was wearing an outfit today that contains all the essentials of her personal style: lace, denim, brass beaded jewelry, and a little snatch of what could be seen as a tribal motif in her straw hat. She sticks to what she instinctively likes, and it pronounces her spirited, down-to-earth personality quite well.

Spontaneous

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Spontaneity is the opposite of procrastination. It's getting a hit of inspiration and, instead of tucking the idea away for another day, doing it right now. I've found my well-worn rut of everyday habits, though easy and pleasant, are not the things I really want to do. Recently I've started an ongoing list of things I really need to do and things I really want to do, all combined. (Yes, this is planned spontaneity.) I don't prioritize the items on the list. When I come home from work or have the day off, I let myself pick anything from the list. Most take little time, and I can do several in one day. If I choose all want-to's and no need-to's, I don't berate myself for that. The line is hard to draw anyway. Anything on my list is far more beneficial and even productive than vegging out on whatever suggested YouTube videos pop up or reading whatever blog articles other people have written today. I'm starting to live according to my own agenda and not someone else's. And for the record, doing a want-to usually invigorates me and makes me ready to tackle a need-to. When it comes down to it, spontaneity is listening to your thoughts when you're being honest about what's important to you.

I'm thankful for days off so that I can wear stuff like this. Although I like to dress up for some events and non-events... like work, I'm completely at home in something slouchy (some would say sloppy...) and uber-casual. I feel free to do whatever I want all day- even if it's stay at home and sew or party plan or read the afternoon away.

The Texas sun is back- and shining so brightly I wasn't able to look at the camera! Not to mention that it was getting kind of warm in that cardigan. Just so you know, cardigans and other outer layers are still necessary wardrobe items year-round here in Texas; we need to bundle up for the frigid air conditioned indoors!

On Tuesdays, my sister Andrea and I have similar work schedules, and our workplaces are not too far apart, so we drive together and have some fun sister time. After I picked up Andrea from work we took some photos on our church's beautiful plaza. I just love those pink flowers in the first photo!

Yesterday we had a  fun photo shoot in the rain. It was a great excuse for using umbrellas as props, trying out the wet hair look, and jumping in puddles (which I'm really far too old for. None of those photos will ever make it onto this blog!). My sister-photographer gained some experience with low-light photos and some of the different settings on the camera too. (Except for a day or two, she's taken all my pictures for these 16 days. She managed to take these while cradling an umbrella in one arm to shield her camera; she's a trooper and an awesome sis!)

What do you think of wearing two lacy things together? I started with the cardigan, which has a lacy, open crochet pattern that looks like leaves, and then I pulled some other items in soft, pastel colors to accompany it. Only there wasn't much selection in my 30 items, so this is what I ended up with! I don't love it, but it works OK.
